The job market these days is competitive on the employer side. This is why your company needs a stellar job ad to GRAB the attention of potential candidates looking for jobs.

If you are not getting that many nibbles for your job ad, it may be because of how you crafted it. There are MILLIONS of open positions right now. This is why you need to get creative to get the attention of the talent you want to be part of your team. You need to CAPTIVATE potential candidates.


Since most of the best professionals are already accounted for in other companies, you will have to do something extra to attract the few that are still up for grabs.


How to Create an Attractive Job Ad


Remember that like attracts like, so if you want the highest quality talent to respond to your ad, it needs to be the highest quality ad you can produce.


The Text of the Ad


The first step in making this a reality is being meticulous with how you write the job description. Please, please please spellcheck and grammar check your ad before posting it! It is baffling how employers overlook this. Any grammar or syntax errors will turn off top talent right away.


Break up the text so that it doesn't look like a massive wall of words. Bullet points work well for grabbing the attention of potential job candidates.


Write with a style that will engage the kind of employee you are looking to hire. Depending on what niche or industry your business is in, you will be writing in a different voice and using different expressions.


Your ad should also be focused on attracting someone that can accomplish the tasks you envision being done through the open position. Someone may look good on paper, but will be unable to manage the requirements of the position in the real world.


Besides a job description, emphasize your company's vision, mission, and values. Also underline what kinds of benefits and perks are available if someone chooses to work with your company.


The Visual Appeal of the Ad


Humans are visual creatures that respond well to images. Ads with visuals have been found to be more appealing to candidates than those without ads. An image with your products or team of employees works well at attracting the right candidates for the job you are posting an ad for.


Do you want to really stand out? Transform your ad into an info-graphic! These will be engaging and help candidates gauge their fit by doing a quick scan of it.


The Requirements of the Ad


When it comes to writing about what is required for the open position, avoid going overboard. Be reasonable with how many requirements you are asking for.

If you are simply putting up a comprehensive list of skills necessary for the position, you may turn potential candidates off because they may feel it is too demanding.


The best way to list all of the things you want in your ideal candidate is by making a list of required skills, along with a list of skills which would be nice to have.
