The work behind the work

I stepped into nonprofit leadership with my eyes open. It still changed my view.

I thought I understood what it meant to be an empathetic, driven leader and an experienced consultant. Then I became an Executive Director.

I built budgets, raised money, hired people, answered to a board, and carried decisions into dinner, weekends, and the hours when my family had every right to expect me back. The organization did good work. I also saw how easily an operating model can consume every ounce of time one capable leader has and still ask for more.

People love this work. That love has been treated like a substitute for adequate pay, staffing, and operating support for too long. It cannot carry an organization by itself. Leaders have families, bodies, interests, and lives outside the mission. No community is served by a model that uses up the person responsible for holding it together.

Part of my work is helping clients and the broader nonprofit community rethink what one person and a small, fragmented team can reasonably carry. The answer is not more encouragement to keep pushing. It is clearer operating decisions, useful systems, enough support, and room for leaders to lead.

My recently completed master's in Organizational Leadership is grounded in current working philosophies. Two decades supporting over a dozen industries lets me bring in lessons from publicly traded companies, private businesses, startups, and mission-led organizations without pretending those environments are identical.

I have worked inside AI tools since 2022. I am not interested in selling the tool as an answer to every problem. I teach leaders how to decide what belongs in the tool, what needs a boundary, and what still needs them fully present.
